Why do I keep blundering in chess?

Why do I keep blundering in chess? One reason: every puzzle you've solved was from your side of the board. Never once from theirs.

But in your games, plenty of the tactics are theirs: the ones you allow.

What kinds of blunder are there?

A Peekchess report's blunder patterns: tactics you missed on one side, threats you allowed on the other, each split by pattern
A Peekchess report splits blunders two ways: tactics you missed, and threats you allowed.

The left chart is the one puzzles train. The right one is the one they never do.

Why is a threat harder to see?

1Finding a winYou know there's a tactic. You go looking for it.
2Seeing a threatNothing tells you. You have to ask what they want, every move.

A puzzle tells you there's something to find. Your opponent won't.

How do you train to see their threats?

  1. 1After every move they make, ask: what does that move want?
  2. 2Look at their checks, captures and threats before your own.
  3. 3Solve some puzzles from their side: play the attack they're about to make.

The last one is what threat puzzles in Peekchess do: you play the attack your opponent is about to make, so you see it coming. How Puzzles works
